Letter from Ole Rolvaag to Jennie Rolvaag, 1929 February 6

Dear wife!
Today I got up at 9 o’clock, washed myself and shaved, and then went down and ate good breakfast. The breakfast was good, but I had a caller while I ate, so there was not much peace to get.
And then I managed it yesterday evening. Ignorance is always bliss. If I had any idea (which I should have had) about the audience, I would not have done this here. The hall was taken up to the last seat. One of the learned gentlemen down here said to me afterwards, “It is by far the best lecture by a literary worker we have had in many years.” If it is true, I do not know, but the audience was calm, I know that.
Yesterday I ate a little eggs and ham for dinner, and for supper only a half-slice of bread and a glass of milk. After the lecture Professor McLaughlin invited me home for a smoke (he is the head of the department of history) and his wife made wonderful chocolate and sandwiches for me- she knew I needed it, she said.
Today I have had two invitations already to lecture here in Chicago- $100.00 and all the fees. Have not decided yet, and do not want to before I come home so I can see how I stand the stress, but it could be that I take both.
Today I am not eating again until the evening. Have not seen this Moody-woman yet, but have talked to her on the phone; will meet her today after the lecture.
Otherwise I have nothing especially new to tell you. You take good care of the mail now. Answer the letters you think you can answer.
Had a telegram from Saxton yesterday evening. He finally wants me to come. Do not want to answer him before the St. Olaf Club banquet.
Greet everyone!
Father myself
